Statement on Officer's Shot During Investigation

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

July 7, 2021

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Larry Cosme, President of the Federal Law Enforcement Officers Association (FLEOA) – the nation’s largest non-partisan, not-for-profit professional association representing 30,000 federal law enforcement officers and agents across 65 federal agencies – issued the following statement regarding the law enforcement agents shot in the line of duty in Chicago this week:

"It is with a saddened heart we hear the news today about injuries sustained by Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives federal agents and Chicago police officers while on duty. Federal agents work hand in hand with local law enforcement to combat violent crime in cities and counties across the country. The shooting Wednesday and crime waves this weekend are a solemn reminder of exactly how dangerous these missions are and the importance of supporting and protecting law enforcement,” President Cosme explained.

"While we are thankful the injuries sustained today are not life threatening at this time, often, that is not the case. This year alone, we have lost 160 officers in line of duty deaths. In Chicago, where these officers were dutifully serving, there have been 36 shootings of police officers this year alone. Violence is on the rise in cities across the country and it is critical law enforcement officers and agents are equipped with the tools to defend themselves and the communities they serve,” Cosme furthered.

"FLEOA will continue to monitor this situation closely and work with federal and local law enforcement to ensure these officers are cared for during their recovery. Our hearts are with the agents and officer’s families as they battle this trauma as well. To law enforcement across the country on the front lines of public safety, we stand by you and your sacrifice,” Cosme concluded.
