FLEOA Supports Gun Trafficking Act of 2021

May 20, 2021

The Honorable Patrick Leahy
United States Senate
437 Russell Senate Office Building
Washington, DC 20510

Dear Senator Leahy,

On behalf of the Federal Law Enforcement Officers Association (FLEOA) – the largest
nonprofit, non-partisan professional association representing almost 30,000 federal law
enforcement officers and agents across 65 agencies, including the honorable Agents of the
Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (BATF) – we write to you with our support of
the proposed "Crime Gun Tracing Modernization Act of 2021.”

This legislation will allow the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives
(ATF) to create a modern electronic database system to search firearms records more
efficiently. Currently, ATF uses 19th century technology to physically search through
paper files in boxes in order to locate firearms records. This is inefficient and jeopardizes
public safety when these searches should have been computerized decades ago. This new
database will permit BATF agents to utilize their time in a more efficient manner, freeing
them to work on other important investigations including those involving violent crimes.
As the primary federal agency with authority over firearms they will spend less time on
paper records searches and more time fighting crime. This ultimately will keep the citizens
of the country safer and more secure.

The BATF is tasked with investigating some of the most dangerous and violent crimes
involving criminal gangs, homicides, school shootings, bombings and terrorism. They
should at least be able to do so with the modern technology of a computerized firearms
database search system.

FLEOA appreciates your time and effort on this matter and look forward to working with
you on this important legislation. Should you have any questions or need any additional
information, feel free to contact us at fleoa@fleoa.org.

Sincerely,

Larry  Cosme
National President
