FLEOA's Statement on the ICE Facility Fire

April 13, 2021

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Larry Cosme, President of the Federal Law Enforcement Officers Association (FLEOA) -the nation’s largest non-partisan, not-for-profit professional association representing close to 30,000 federal law enforcement officers and agents across 65 federal agencies – respond to fire set at Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) building by rioters in Portland, Oregon:

"The continued and unabated violence in Portland against federal, state, and local law enforcement is indeed some of the worst domestic attacks on law enforcement our nation has seen in recent years. Nearly every day for the last year, violent riots have raged on in the city and it seems almost completely lost to anarchy. The fire lit this weekend at an ICE facility is yet another example of this escalating violence,” FLEOA President Cosme explained.

"As defenders of the American people’s constitutional rights, FLEOA stands with peaceful protestors. In Portland, we are not seeing peaceful protests. Rather, rioters are continuing to levy violent and extremist attacks on law enforcement. These violent attacks require an appropriate law enforcement response to maintain the safety of Portland’s many non-violent citizens and their governing institutions. It is truly saddening to see rioters encircle graffiti ridden government buildings lit aflame and littered with debris and broken glass, chanting ‘This is what community looks like.’ This is not what any safe, prosperous city should look like,” Cosme explained.

"ICE officers and agents are dutifully carrying out their responsibilities under the laws of the United States. In our great Constitutional republic, Americans who disagree with those laws have various democratic pathways for advocating reforms. Violence against law enforcement has never been and will never be an effective solution. This violence is doing nothing more than putting innocent lives at risk and destroying the City of Portland.” Cosme concluded, "Our thoughts remain with the courageous officers and agents working to maintain the safety of Portland. We urge an end to the violence and rebuke any attempts to invoke change through violent activity. Violence will be met with the law enforcement response necessary to maintain public safety. Finally, we encourage the swift arrest and prosecution of those responsible for the fire at the ICE facility this weekend.”
