Confirmation of DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Larry Cosme, National President of the Federal Law Enforcement Officers Association (FLEOA), issued the following statement applauding the Senate confirmation of Alejandro Mayorkas to serve as Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security:

"The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) carries out many vital national security missions. Consistent, confirmed leadership is necessary that work to be done. FLEOA is pleased that with the confirmation of Alejandro Mayorkas not only does DHS have a confirmed leader, but it has a leader who will defend federal law enforcement agents within the Department and value the input of stakeholders like FLEOA,” said President Larry Cosme.

"Mayorkas brings significant and unique experience to his new role. Not only has Mayorkas previously served in leadership roles within the Department, but he has also served as a federal prosecutor where he earned commendation for his role in Operation Polar Cap, one of the largest money-laundering cases in history. Mayorkas, born in Havana, Cuba, is also the first immigrant to lead the Department which handles immigration policy,” Cosme continued.

Cosme concluded, "Secretary Mayorkas is a proven supporter of federal law enforcement who we expect will work to appropriately enforce the laws of our nation. During his confirmation hearing Mayorkas spoke out against radical calls to ‘abolish ICE’ and noted the value of each law enforcement component with the DHS umbrella. FLEOA welcomes Mayorkas to his position as DHS Secretary and looks forward to working with him.”
