FLEOA endorses Protect and Serve Act of 2019 in letter to Rep. Rutherford
Washington, D.C. – Today Nathan Catura, President of the Federal Law Enforcement Officers Association (FLEOA), send the following letter to Rep. Rutherford on the Protect and Serve Act of 2019. FLEOA is the nation’s largest non-partisan, not-for-profit professional association representing more than 27,000 federal law enforcement officers and agents across 65 federal
agencies.
The Honorable John Rutherford
1711 Longworth House Office Building
Washington, DC 20515
Dear Representative Rutherford:
I am writing you to endorse your introduction of the Protect and Serve Act of 2019. I am the President of The Federal Law Enforcement Officers Association (FLEOA) which represents almost 27,000 federal officers and agents in 65 agencies. Assaults on law enforcement officers have been dramatically increasing, and we are hopeful this bill will prevent or deter further assaults.
Representative Rutherford, as a former law enforcement officer you know the stress experienced by families of the men and women who risk their lives daily to provide public safety. This bill, by making it a federal crime with a 10 year sentence to assault a law enforcement officer, will make criminal perpetrators think twice before resorting to violence. In addition, we applaud the
provisions in your bill that expand sentencing guidelines when a firearm or dangerous weapon is employed or when there is an attempt to kidnap or kill the officer. These are necessary considerations when addressing this abhorrent behavior.
Mr. Rutherford, I want to take this opportunity to thank you for your continued support for law enforcement with the introduction of the Protect and Serve Act of 2019. We also thank you for your personal support, in addition to legislative support, for the law enforcement community.
Sincerely,
Nathan R. Catura
National President
Federal Law Enforcement Officers Association
