NEC: FLEOA States All Federal LEO'S Are Essential

August 25, 2015

The Honorable John A. Boehner
Speaker
House of Representatives
Washington, DC 20515

The Honorable Nancy Pelosi
Minority Leader
House of Representatives
Washington, DC 20515

Dear Mr. Speaker and Madam Minority Leader:

On behalf of federal law enforcement officers nationwide,
I am writing to you regarding the prospect of another
government shutdown, and its negative impact on Officer
safety. Whether caused by the surpassing of the debt
ceiling or a lapse in the budget, the net effect is the same
for federal law enforcement officers who may be wrongly
deemed "non-essential," and furloughed. Of critical
concern is the fact that many of these furloughed federal
officers will be directed to lock up their agency-issued
firearms. Unfortunately, violent criminals who might seek
to harm furloughed federal law enforcement officers will not
receive a similar directive. I respectfully ask that you take all
legislative steps necessary to ensure our federal law enforcement.
officers will not be disarmed if a government shutdown occurs.

We take the unwavering position that all federal law
enforcement officers are essential, and play a vital role in
protecting our citizenry, institutions and environment.
When an agency disarms a furloughed Officer, both the
Officer and the law abiding public are placed at risk.
Violent criminals will not take pause nor be merciful while
patiently waiting for furloughed Officers to get their
weapons back.

According to the National Law Enforcement Officers
Memorial Fund, ambush was the lead cause of law
enforcement felonious fatalities for the past two years.
Recent FBI Bulletins have made clear that terror groups
are encouraging their followers to attack law enforcement
and military personnel. While we recognize the critical
importance of debt limit and budget negotiations, now is
not the time to disarm any federal law enforcement
officer, nor place the American public at risk.

As the leaders of our Congress, I respectfully ask that
you take decisive action to ensure all federal law
enforcement officers remain armed and deemed
essential. Our law enforcement mantra is, "Safety First,"
and we owe that to our Officers and the American public.

Respectfully yours,

Jon Adler
National President
