Dear Mr. Adler:

Thank you for your recent correspondence. We regret that some of your members were upset at some of the humor at this year's Gridiron Club and Foundation dinner. We apologize for any hard feelings that it caused.

Ill feelings certainly were not our intent. Our 130-year-old organization has hosted every President of the United States since Grover Cleveland. We are very proud to have worked harmoniously with the brave men and women of the Secret Service throughout the agency's laudable history of providing protection of the President.

Rest assured that our references in word and song to the recent issues affecting the Secret Service were made in the same spirit that the club always has followed. We poke fun at news makers and news gatherers, but always, as our motto says, in a manner that will "singe, not bum."

As for our guest speakers, they alone are responsible for the content and delivery of their remarks. Their jokes or opinions at the dinner do not speak for the Gridiron Club.

That said, we do appreciate your feedback and we will keep your concerns in mind in the future. And on behalf of our members, it is my honor and privilege to say to your members, "Thank you for your service."

Sincerely,

Clarence E. Page
