FLEOA Endorses H.R. 5829

   FLEOA Endorses H.R. 5829, the COVID-19 Individual Liberty Act of 2021 - November 10, 2021

   November 9, 2021

The Honorable William Timmons

United States House of Representatives

Washington, D.C.  20515

Dear Representative Timmons,

We are writing to you on behalf of the more than 31,000 members of the Federal Law Enforcement Officers Association (FLEOA) to offer our strong support for H.R. 5829, the COVID-19 Individual Liberty Act of 2021.

As an organization representing law enforcement officers across the federal government, we have been on record repeatedly and communicated to the Biden Administration that while we support and advocate for our members to voluntarily receive the COVID-19 vaccine, we are concerned about executive overreach or forcing and then penalizing those that are hesitant to receive one of the currently available vaccines due to previous health conditions or a deeply held personal or religious belief.  These concerns not only lie in health and personal beliefs covered under the federal EEO regulations, but also in the fact that other effective COVID-19 vaccines are in development and may be less concerning to our members, as is the question of natural immunity which has also not been studied enough and the mandate does not take into account.  We appreciate that your legislation addresses this issue.

Instead of villainizing or penalizing those who risk their lives every day to protect American citizens, we support the option of choice as a way that through time, education, research, and understanding, many concerns may be addressed.  President Biden’s Executive Orders, which mandate vaccination for federal employees and contractors, only serves to undercut the progress that was being made with voluntary vaccine efforts.

As you said, "no American should have to choose between their conscience, their health, and their job,” and we feel Executive Order 14043 requires just that.  We have heard from thousands of members, many of whom are near retirement age, that they fear having to quit or losing their jobs due to this E.O.  That is not right and our members, who are highly trained and handle some of the most sensitive efforts in our nation including protecting the vaccines when distributed, deserve to be treated better.

This mandate also comes at a time when federal law enforcement officers are being mobilized to handle the continuing crisis at the Southwest border where we have seen over 200,000 illegal aliens enter our nation each month—many of whom are "caught and released” into the U.S. and given the option of receiving the vaccine.  It is inexplicable that the same Administration that wants to force vaccines on its workforce is giving illegal aliens and those seeking to stay in America the option of being vaccinated or not.

On behalf of the membership of the Federal Law Enforcement Officers Association, thank you again for your leadership on this important issue of choice and look forward to working with you to address what can only be described as un-American.

Sincerely,

Larry Cosme

National President
