H.R. 2083 - Protecting Students

September 3, 2014

The Honorable Michael Fitzpatrick
U.S. House of Representatives
2400 Rayburn House Office Building
Washington DC 20515

Dear Representative Fitzpatrick:

The Federal Law Enforcement Officers Association (FLEOA) is the Nation’s largest non‐partisan association representing federal law enforcement. Through its membership ranks are thousands of federal agents that have sworn an oath to protect the American public from danger, including the most precious and innocent of which are our children.

Historically, the American public has always looked upon schools as one of the safest places our children could be. Unfortunately, with technology and the rise of predatory crimes on children, even the classroom's safe environment has been called into question.

One step in ensuring the classrooms remain a safe haven for our  children is through legislation such as H.R. 2083– "Protecting Students from Sexual and Violent Predators Act." This act would mandate that schools around the country conduct routine background checks of school staff to ensure none have been convicted of crimes that could impact the classroom and our children.

Currently, no nationwide background check system is in place for school staff, opening up the possibility of convicted predators gaining employment in a school.

FLEOA strongly supports this measure as an additional tripwire that could ensnare known predators that could otherwise prey upon our children in the classroom.

FLEOA appreciates your leadership on this issue and looks forward to the swift passage of H.R. 2083.

Respectfully,

Jon Adler
National President
