FLEOA Supports Historic Veterans Bill S1950

January 27, 2014

The Honorable Bernie Sanders

Chairman
U.S. Office of Personnel Management
412 Russell Senate Office Building
Washington, DC 20510

Dear Chairman Sanders:

I am writing on behalf of the more than 26,000 members of the Federal Law Enforcement Officers Association (FLEOA) to advise you of our strong support of S. 1950, the Comprehensive Veterans Health and Benefits and Military Retirement Pay Restoration Act of 2014. On behalf of FLEOA, thank you for taking on these critical issues.

FLEOA supports provisions in the legislation to create, expand, advance, and extend a number of VA benefits, services and programs that are important to wounded, injured and ill veterans of our military, and would provide great relief, support and services to their family members who care for them.  The bill would also restore military retirement cost-of-living adjustments that FLEOA believes were wrongly reduced as a part of the 2013 House-Senate budget agreement.

Moreover, this legislation would ensure that in any government shutdown environment in the future, veterans benefits payments would not be delayed or put in jeopardy. This measure also would provide additional financial support to survivors of service members who die in the line of duty, as well as expanded access for them to GI Bill educational benefits. FLEOA believes that it is crucial that no veteran or their survivors face undue hardship due to political gamesmanship.

On behalf of the membership of the Federal Law Enforcement Officers Association, we strongly support this legislation and its intent to improve many programs of the Department of Veterans Affairs that are crucial in helping veterans rehabilitate and recover from disabilities acquired while serving; finding employment; attaining new vocational skills and education; and in receiving vital health care and rehabilitative services.

This bill deserves the support of all Senators, and it should be enacted at the earliest possible time.  Please do not hesitate to contact me if you require any additional information or assistance.

Respectfully,

Frank Terreri
National Vice President for Legislative Affairs
